Velocity=Space/Time

2017 / Video on 15’ loop / Variable dimensions

In nature, there is no such thing as absolute repose: matter, as a whole, is always moving in a straight and uniform motion. This piece is the video recording of an ephemeral site-specific event, an experiment which looks into this quality of objects, as well as the concept of space-time that has dominated our cosmology since Einstein. Thus, I set out to calculate the velocity of an exhibition room at the Artium museum, using pyrotechnic fuse and a stopwatch. I draw attention to the fact that the metre standard itself is determined by the speed of light, and that our standard of time (the second) is defined by counting the oscillations of one atom of caesium.
