Libration RGB

2015 / / 4’ video, on loop

We always see the same side of the Moon: down here on Earth, with the naked eye, we can only see 50% of its surface, but if we look at it for long enough, and thanks to its wagging motion, we can actually see up to 60% of it. Here, I combine this fact with the Newtonian idea of the decomposition of light. I have taken a video made by NASA (depicting the Moon’s libration) and broken it down into the three light-colours, which are then slightly offset. This gives us three images of the Moon that only overlap in one tiny area, where the characteristic white of our satellite is duly recomposed.
