Permutations

2016 / Stickers on plexiglass and mirror / 35.5 × 37.5 cm

The variation in the order of a set of elements, which in mathematics is known as the “permutation”, is somewhat reminiscent of theoretical-practical research in the field of art. In this piece, I worked with the little translucent stickers that I had been using, when studying for my doctoral thesis, to bookmark certain pages. I reproduced the 120 possible permutations of their five colours when laid on top of each other, resulting in a broad range of hues. Each combination of five stickers is made by translating the numerical sequence into the corresponding colours, and these numbers can be seen in the mirror provided.
